Maharagama Urban Council area is located 16 km south-east of the City of Colombo. This area shows a high growth in terms of population and physical resources, and the growth potential of this area continues to increase due to its location, which is centered around developed cities such as Dehiwala, Kotte and Nugegoda. The High Level Road, which runs through this city, connects this city with the capital city of Colombo, and the expressway access point located within the area of this city provides connectivity with many other major cities.

Maharagama Urban Council was established on 15.04.2002 by the Gazette No. 1218/35 of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka dated 10 January 2002. At present, there are many employees and officers employed at the Municipal Council. This is a local government body in the district of Colombo that has achieved development very rapidly. The Urban Council is committed to improving the health condition of the people living in the area, to developing, repairing and maintaining the roads and thoroughfares in a very good condition, to fix street lamps in all parts of the Urban Council and to providing many other public services.
